Nokia Developing Meltemi - Linux-based operating system for mobiles

      After a short while Intel and Samsung announced they will be working together to develop a new Linux-based mobile operating system, reports have come in of Nokia developing a Linux-based OS as well, except, it will be meant for its low-end phones. The new Nokia mobile OS is reportedly code named “Meltemi,” Greek for the summer winds that blow over the Aegean Sea. Nokia has yet to officially comment on the veracity of these reports.
    Nearly half of Nokia’s global sales are low-end feature phones, and perhaps a new operating system for these devices may just be a breath of fresh air for the consumers in the segment, replacing the very familiar Symbian interface with something that will hopefully make feature phones seem smart. The consumer, once again, stands to be the winner.
     From the various times that Meltemi has been spotted on Nokia internal videos and memos, it looks like the OS might just be for touch-based phones, and will bring in learnings from the MeeGo effort. While we can’t say just how well it will do in the market, what we can say for sure is that the Finnish giant sure seems to be expending a fair bit of effort trying to recapture its former glories, from its first dual-SIM feature phones to Symbian Belle and Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

Jelly Bean source code released (Android SDK 4.1)

A few hours ago, Google provided a tasty treat for developers and modders by announcing the release of the Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean source code. This move by Google to release the source code is part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and is available for download to anyone looking to work on builds for their Android devices.

As per a statement by Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru, Technical Lead, Android Open Source Project, Google, said, “We're releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today. The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1. The name of the development branch is jb-dev. We recommend that you create new clients, even if you're working in the master branch. It'll make your clients smaller and faster to sync. Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus S and Xoom will follow.”
Activating at a breath taking rate
Source code available

Commenting on this announcement, a report by Ubergizmo states, “This is good news for Cyanogen Mod fans which will definitely speed up the process of CM10 now that the source code is available.” In a related report regarding the source code being made available, a report by The Verge states, “There's still no word on when users can expect proper factory images for any of the above devices, but they should come after the OTA updates begin rolling out.”

Google recently announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at this year’s Google I/O conference and Commenting on the latest operating system, Google states Jelly Bean builds on top of Ice Cream Sandwich. This OS makes everything smoother, faster and more fluid. They claim that notifications are now more dynamic. Elaborating on this feature, they state that if one is late for a meeting or missed a call, and then they can send an e-mail or call directly from notifications. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google claims that the keyboard is smarter and more accurate, and can predict the user’s next word. Another interesting feature is that voice typing is faster, working even when one does not have a data connection.

Google state that they have redesigned search from the ground up in Jelly Bean, with a new user interface and faster, more natural Voice Search. They go on to state that one can type their query or simply ask Google a question. Google can speak back, delivering a precise answer, powered by the Knowledge Graph, if it knows one, in addition to a list of search results.

Google claims, “Today’s smart devices still rely on you to do pretty much everything—that is, until now. Google Now is a new feature that gets you just the right information at just the right time. It tells you today’s weather before you start your day, how much traffic to expect before you leave for work or your favorite team's score as they’re playing. There’s no digging required: cards appear at the moment you need them most.”

Menus

            Menus are an important part of any application. They provide familiar interfaces that reveal application functions and settings. Android offers an easy programming interface for developers to provide standardized application menus for various situations.   Android offers three fundamental types of application menus:
Options Menu
This is the primary set of menu items for an Activity. It is revealed by pressing the device MENU key. Within the Options Menu are two groups of menu items:
Icon Menu
This is the collection of items initially visible at the bottom of the screen at the press of the MENU key. It supports a maximum of six menu items. These are the only menu items that support icons and the only menu items that do not support checkboxes or radio buttons.
Expanded Menu
This is a vertical list of items exposed by the "More" menu item from the Icon Menu. It exists only when the Icon Menu becomes over-loaded and is comprised of the sixth Option Menu item and the rest.
Example:

public class OptMenuActivity extends Activity {
    /** Called when the activity is first created. */
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
        // TODO Auto-generated method stub

        menu.add("Settings").setIcon(R.drawable.ic_launcher);
        menu.add("DialPad").setIcon(R.drawable.ic_launcher);

        return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
        // TODO Auto-generated method stub

        if(item.getTitle()=="Settings")
        {
            Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "settings", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
        }

        else if(item.getTitle()=="DialPad")
        {
            Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "DialPad", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
        }

        return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
    }

}

Context Menu
This is a floating list of menu items that may appear when you perform a long-press on a View (such as a list item).

Example:

package com.sai.menu;

import android.app.ListActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.ContextMenu;
import android.view.MenuInflater;
import android.view.MenuItem;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.ContextMenu.ContextMenuInfo;
import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;
import android.widget.Toast;
import android.widget.AdapterView.AdapterContextMenuInfo;

public class ShowContextMenu extends ListActivity {

    /** Called when the activity is first created. */
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

        setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,
                android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, getResources().getStringArray(R.array.names)));

        registerForContextMenu(getListView());
    }

    public void onCreateContextMenu(ContextMenu menu, View v, ContextMenuInfo menuInfo) {
        super.onCreateContextMenu(menu, v, menuInfo);
        MenuInflater inflater = getMenuInflater();
        inflater.inflate(R.menu.context_menu, menu);
    }

    public boolean onContextItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
        AdapterContextMenuInfo info = (AdapterContextMenuInfo) item.getMenuInfo();
        String[] names = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.names);
        switch(item.getItemId()) {
        case R.id.edit:
            Toast.makeText(this, "You have chosen the " + getResources().getString(R.string.edit) +
                    " context menu option for " + names[(int)info.id],
                    Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
            return true;
        case R.id.save:
            Toast.makeText(this, "You have chosen the " + getResources().getString(R.string.save) +
                    " context menu option for " + names[(int)info.id],
                    Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
            return true;
        case R.id.delete:
            Toast.makeText(this, "You have chosen the " + getResources().getString(R.string.delete) +
                    " context menu option for " + names[(int)info.id],
                    Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
            return true;
        case R.id.view:
            Toast.makeText(this, "You have chosen the " + getResources().getString(R.string.view) +
                    " context menu option for " + names[(int)info.id],
                    Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
            return true;
        default:
            return super.onContextItemSelected(item);
        }
    }
Submenu
This is a floating list of menu items that is revealed by an item in the Options Menu or a Context Menu. A Submenu item cannot support nested Submenus.
